Think waterfalls to discover, bridges to cross, animals to spot, castles to explore, playgrounds along the way and, importantly, plenty of places to stop for a snack, coffee or picnic. These aren’t necessarily huge hikes. They’re the walks we think work particularly well when you have younger children in tow and want the journey itself to feel like part of the adventure. Family Walks in Manchester & Greater Manchester 📍 Daisy Nook Country Park, Oldham Daisy Nook is a lovely countryside escape when you want woodland without travelling too far from Manchester. There are wooded trails, streams, open green spaces and plenty of wildlife for children to spot along the way. It’s the sort of walk where little ones can collect sticks, investigate muddy paths and stop every five minutes without it ruining the day. Little Northerners Tip: Let the kids lead the exploring rather than trying to complete a set route. Best for: Woodland walks, wildlife and younger explorers. 📍 Dovestone Reservoir, Saddleworth Dovestone is one of those places that makes you feel much further away from Manchester than you actually are. The reservoir is surrounded by dramatic hills and countryside, with water, wildlife and changing scenery giving children plenty to look at as you walk. Best for: Big views, nature and family picnics. 📍 Heaton Park, Manchester If your children aren’t convinced by the idea of “going for a walk”, Heaton Park is a good place to start. You can wander through woodland, around the lake and across huge open parkland, but there are also playgrounds, animals and plenty of distractions along the way. Best for: Mixed-age families, animals and walks with plenty of stops. 📍 Etherow Country Park, Stockport This is a lovely waterside walk for children who enjoy spotting ducks, birds and wildlife as they go. It’s particularly useful when you want to get outside without committing to anything too strenuous, and there’s plenty for children to stop and investigate along the way. Best for: Easy family walks, wildlife and active little ones. 📍 Reddish Vale Country Park, Stockport Reddish Vale feels like a proper little countryside escape, with woodland, water, wildlife and plenty of room to explore. There’s a duck pond and lots of interesting spots along the paths, which helps keep children engaged instead of simply walking from A to B. Best for: Puddle jumping, wildlife and nature-loving kids. 📍 Marple Bridge & Canal Walks, Stockport Marple is brilliant when you want a walk with something at the end of it. Explore the canal, watch boats and
